A Doctor From Penang Who Fought The Plague In China

Dr Wu Lien-teh, a doctor from Penang, Malaysia, had an extraordinary life and many achievements. He was the first Chinese medical student at Cambridge University in the UK. He supported cutting off queues (traditional Chinese pigtails) and the anti-opium movement. He met important figures like Yuan Shikai and Chiang Kai-shek. He improved and perfected the design of masks. He promoted cremation and the isolation of plague patients. He helped China eliminate the plague and was the first Chinese nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology.
